How Old Do You Have to be to Qualify for Social Security Disability?

Social Security Disability has helped a lot of people in need but it is not for just anyone with financial troubles. Social Security Disability has been referred to as America’s safety net because it refers to monthly cash benefits you can receive when you are unable to work at all or as much due to some sort of disability, disorder, or illness. For example, if you have been diagnosed with clinical depression and you can still work but not full time anymore, you may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits. But, in addition to having some sort of disability, there are other qualifications that must be met. Our Social Security Disability lawyers at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to go over the age requirements for Social Security Disability. If you are in need of these cash benefits, call Deputy and Mizell today for your free consultation. We can be reached at 573-346-9990.

How Old Do You Have to be to Qualify for Social Security Disability?

Generally speaking, the rules of SSDI and SSI are more favorable to claimants who are 50 and older. This is because individuals in this age group have more limited opportunities to find work due to their health and mental conditions, their inability to perform past relevant work, and the reality that employers are not as likely to hire older workers because of the perception they are more difficult to train.

However, according to the Social Security Administration:

“You can use the online application to apply for disability benefits if you:

Are age 18 or older;
Are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record;
Are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death; and
Have not been denied disability benefits in the last 60 days. If your application was recently denied, our Internet Appeal application is a starting point to request a review of the determination we made.

You can now also file for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) online but only if you meet certain requirements. You are eligible to file online for SSI if you:

Are between the ages of 18 and 65;
Have never been married;
Aren’t blind;
Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands;
Haven’t applied for or received SSI benefits in the past; and
Are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance at the same time as your SSI claim.”
