Derek was born and raised in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Derek attended Camdenton High School where he played football for the Camdenton Lakers. He received an academic scholarship to Drury University and studied abroad for a semester in London, England. While at Drury University, Derek was a member of the Drury University Bass Fishing Team and competed nationally against other college fishing teams. He graduated from Drury University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

In 2010 Derek was accepted to the University of Tulsa College of Law in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During his last year of law school Derek attended the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia, Missouri because he knew he wanted to practice law in the Ozarks. While in law school Derek gained legal experience by working for Corporate Counsel at Saint Francis Corporate Health System in Tulsa, Oklahoma and also interning with several judges in Missouri’s 26th Judicial Circuit Court.

Derek graduated law school in 2013 and jointed Deputy & Mizell, L.L.C. as an associate attorney. In 2014, Derek began practicing social security disability law and his practice has flourished. Derek typically has several hearings a week at Social Security Administration offices across the State of Missouri.

Derek fell in love with social security disability law because it most closely aligned with his values and the reason he became a lawyer; to help people. Derek is very passionate about his clients and considers it a privilege to be able to fight for their disability benefits.

Derek enjoys fishing, hunting and travelling. Derek has travelled to 18 countries and most of them he travelled to by himself with just a backpack. Derek has been married to his lovely wife, Kyla, since 2016. Derek and Kyla love to travel and enjoy spending time on the Lake of the Ozarks with their friends and family.
