What You Can Do To Help Your Children Through Your Divorce During The Holiday Season
BE HONEST.
It will likely do more harm than good if you aren’t honest with your children about this. A lack of communication can leave them to wonder and there’s a possibility they could just end up imagining the worst at that point. When they have a question, answer it. Let them know it’s ok to have questions and that you’re still a family.
GIVE REASSURANCE.
Your child’s first instinct may be to blame themselves for this divorce. Don’t let them do that. Assure them that this is in NO way their fault. Again, be honest and let them know you’re here for them.
BE PRESENT.
While you and your ex are getting divorced, you’re both still parents. Be present in your child’s life, especially around the holidays. If it’s uncomfortable to be around each other at holiday events, then do your best to create a schedule where you can both be there for children, just separately. Remember, just because you chose this divorce, doesn’t mean your children did.

Refrain from speaking poorly about each other, posting inappropriate, negative comments on social media, and missing events all together simply because you don’t like each other. Show your kids you can work together FOR THEM, divorced or together.
