Who can apply for Social Security disability benefits?

If you are age 18 or older, not currently receiving benefits or been denied benefits in the last 60 days, and unable to work because of a medical condition, you may apply for Social Security disability benefits.
How, when and where do I apply?

As soon as you become disabled, it is important to apply for disability benefits. You can access the application online or by phone, or you may make an appointment at your local Social Security office and apply in person.
What information is needed to apply?

It is possible that claims for disability benefits could take longer than other types of claims. To shorten the filing process, it is helpful to have information and documents on hand when you apply. Working to gather any and all medical evidence to support your claim ahead of time will be additionally helpful. Plan to have your Social Security number and proof of age. You will need the names, addresses and phone numbers of the hospital(s) and/or clinics, doctors and caseworkers that assisted you during your treatment, as well as the names and dosages of all medications prescribed during those visits. Have medical records and laboratory test results in your possession at the time you apply, as well as your employer’s information. A copy of your most recent W-2 is also needed, or federal tax return if you are self-employed.
What happens after I apply?

After your application is received, you will receive a confirmation of your application, either electronically or by mail. During the review of your application, you may be contacted if more information is needed. When your application is processed, the decision will be mailed to you.

What to do while waiting for application to process?

Due to the rise in disability claims, it can take some cases a significant about of time to process. As this may cause a rise in financial concerns, it is wise to plan for this as soon as the injury is incurred and the application is filed. Avoid new debts and large purchases, restructure current debts if possible and consider applying for other benefits you may be eligible for.
What happens if claim is denied?

If you recently applied for Social Security disability benefits and your claim was denied, you may request an appeal and provide additional documentation to support your appeal. You may need to contact your local Social Security office for additional information.
