Safe Boating Tips for National Water Safety Month

Never let an intoxicated person drive the boat.

No matter what the circumstances are, never let someone who appears to be drunk drive the boat home. It simply isn’t worth the consequences, whether they are getting a BWI or seriously injuring someone or worse. There are services available to get your boat home safely in the area or you could phone a friend or family member to help you with this.

Always watch for paddle boarders, kayakers, canoers, fishermen, and swimmers.

Many people may not realize but the Lake of the Ozarks is also a popular destination for other water activities that aren’t boating, such as:

When you are boating, be sure to watch for people doing these things and slow your speed when you are near them. Boat with caution to prevent accidents from occurring.

Always have enough life jackets present for everyone on board, even if you don’t plan to wear them.

If you are pulled over by Water Patrol without enough life jackets on board for everyone, you could be in serious legal trouble. Not only that, but emergencies can happen out on the Lake, and having these nearby can prevent someone from drowning.

Control your speed.

It isn’t a race. Some boating accidents are caused simply by boating way too fast. Bypass an awful tragedy by maintaining your boating speed and by traveling at a safe pace.

Know that holidays weekend on the Lake can be very crowded so be prepared for that.

Holidays, such as Memorial Day weekend or Independence Day weekend, can be extremely busy on the Lake of the Ozarks. Boaters from all over can come down to enjoy this amazing Lake. That being said, if you plan to boat on those types of weekends, then boat cautiously, pay attention to your surroundings and make sure you watch the weather.

Many boating accidents in the area are caused by being boating while intoxicated (when another boat operator is driving under the influence of alcohol). Many boating accidents can also be caused by excessive speeding, overcrowded boats, and driver inexperience.  You should never be afraid to come forth and get good legal representation if negligence by another person fully or partly caused your boating accident. We can help you explore your legal options and pursue compensation for medical costs, hospitalization, lost wages, property damage and more. If a loved one drowned in a fatal accident, we can help you pursue a wrongful death claim. Learn more and call for your free consultation.
