Age Required to Apply for Social Security Disability Benefits

Your need to be at least 18 years or older. You also need to be:

  • NOT currently receiving benefits.
  • OR been denied benefits in the last 60 days.
  • Unable to work because of a medical condition.

Where You Can Apply and How to Go About It

It is extremely important to apply for disability as SOON as you become disabled. You may:

  • Make an appointment at your local social security office and apply in person.
  • Apply online.
  • Apply by phone.

Information Needed to Apply

It is possible that claims for disability benefits could take longer than other types of claims. To shorten the filing process, it is helpful to have information and documents on hand when you apply. Working to gather any and all medical evidence to support your claim ahead of time will be additionally helpful. Plan to have:

  • Your social security number and proof of age.
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of the hospital(s) and/or clinics.
  • Doctors and caseworkers that assisted you during your treatment.
  • The names and dosages of all medications prescribed during those visits.
  • Medical records and laboratory test results in your possession at the time.
  • Employer’s information.
  • A copy of your most recent W-2 or federal tax return if you are self-employed.
